Web Marketing 101

You can make a living, and a good one, with a web marketing business. Many people are doing just that. It’s not something that will bring instant success, nor is it easy to implement. (Many so-called “gurus” would claim the opposite, of course). It will take a lot of hard work and nurturing, especially in the early days.
It will take work and lots of time, and the more time spent putting a good foundation in place, the better guarantee there is of future success. For a newbie Internet Marketer, there is a bewildering variety of products that can be promoted as an affiliate, or information products (eBooks) for which you can buy “resell rights”. It can be a daunting and a time-consuming process to sift through all these, and choose something for which there will be a demand .
But regardless which product you promote, (or whether you have your own information product), to be a success online, you should always be aware of these 2 important points: (I am assuming here that you have a personal website, or blog. If not, it is very easy to set one up).
1. You need to get visitors to your site
2. You must build an ‘optin list’
No.1 will funnel into no. 2 as the visitors to your website are drawn to whatever free offer you are using , to get signups for your list.
It is possible to earn a good living on the Web if you don’t have either list or website. For example, you can concentrate purely on sending traffic to a merchant’s site and have affiliate commissions as your income, or sell products through an eBay shop or dropship site.
But for the majority of Intrenet marketers, it means having your own website on which sales are made, where you get optins to your list and generally keep updating with relevant content.
You should take a critical look at your home page and see if you feel that it’s a place you would like to hang around for a while, or would you want to move on. It should be visually appealing, but the style should not be “overpowering”, or detract from the content. The list optin box should be in a prominent place – good suggestions are top left or top right of the content area (below the header). And it should have an enticing offer, such as an ebook of useful marketing tips, or a weekly newsletter. A graphic of the free gift will help to increase the signup rate.
Your aim should be to get return visitors. If you can bring visitors back to your site, it will help to steadily increase incoming traffic. What brings visitors back is fresh content that is updated regularly. Even if it’s just a few extra lines added to your blog, it is much better than leaving it for weeks, or months, without updating. The the search engines will pick up on any new content, and you ranking will improve.
Another useful tool you can use is the “trackback” – this is where you make mention of another, similar blog on your own blog, by placing a hyperlink to it, in the text of your review or synopsis of the other blog. This improves your “visibility” to the search engines, and topotential customers.
